When you do find the time to write, one way to make it more productive is to find a comfortable place to do it. Whether you are using a computer, typewriter, or old-fashioned pen and paper, better stuff will come if you're thinking about what you're writing and not about how bad your back hurts in this postion you have to maintain to keep your laptop from falling three stories to the pavement below.
Number one, find a place where you can sit comfortably with your chosen utencils. Use a desk, a table, a couch, a recliner, the dewey grass of a warm summer's morning, the lawn chair in the middle of the hay field, or the lounge chair in the middle of the swimming pool (just be really careful with laptops and paper in this one.). Find your comfortable place.
Next, find your happy noise level. Do you need silence? (Good luck if you have kids. Try early in the morning or late at night) Do you like music? Crank your favorites (as long as the neighbors or other inhabitants of your dwelling don't mind). Turn on the television to the trashy reality tv that is so popular today. Just be careful that those characters don't seep into what you're writing. Can't imagine The Situation in an elementary school play. (If you write that concept and make a million bucks, I expect a few thousand to head my way.)
Your happy place isn't completely physical. The physical world certainly shapes it, but you have to find the happy place inside you to be able to create your masterpiece. Once the physical needs are met, it's time to unleash your imagination and let it run through your fingers, onto the page. Enjoy.
