"Write what you know"
If you are any sort of writer at all, you've probably heard this advice. I've heard it from lots of different people along the way. And, as a starting point, it's pretty good advice.
What better way to get started than to write about something you already know. It's the easy way. You can sit down at your computer, or typewriter, or legal pad and pen and start writing.
So what happens when you run out of what you know? It's time for a challenge.
Write what you DON'T know. How can you do that?
Learn. In the internet age, you can learn anything from Antique Woodworking to Zoological diseases. Branch out and learn about something and then write about it.
Read. Talk to people who know what you want to write about. Make what you don't know what you do know.
Writing is not a simple thing. It takes dedication, research, and dedication. Yeah, I said dedication twice. And if you don't understand why, you are not a writer, you're a hack.
My most basic advice to writers is: Write what you know, and then make what you don't know, what you do know, and write about what you know.
